Hypnosis Questions

Hypnosis Isn't What Most People Expect

If you're curious about hypnosis, you're in the right place.

Most people discover that hypnosis is far more natural - and far more empowering than they imagined. Explore the answers below to learn what you can expect and how hypnosis creates lasting change.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and heightened responsiveness that allows you to communicate more effectively with your subconscious mind. Rather than "checking out," most people become deeply relaxed while remaining fully in control and aware of what's happening around them.

In many ways, hypnosis is a state you've already experienced - becoming completely absorbed in a good book, driving home on "autopilot," or losing track of time while working on something you enjoy.

During hypnosis, I simply guide that natural ability toward the specific changes you want to make. It's not magic or mind control.
It's simply a tool that helps you access your own inner resources to create real, lasting change.

How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis works by helping you enter a state of focused attention where your mind becomes less distracted by everyday thoughts and more receptive to learning, insight, and positive change.

In everyday life, many of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are driven by automatic patterns that we've learned over months or years. While your conscious mind may understand what you want to change, those deeper patterns don't always respond to willpower alone.

During hypnosis, we work with those automatic patterns in a calm, focused way, bypassing your critical mind. By combining guided relaxation, focused attention, and carefully chosen hypnotic techniques, it's possible to strengthen helpful beliefs, reduce unhelpful emotional responses, and support new habits that align with your goals.

Rather than controlling your mind, hypnosis helps you make better use of your own natural ability to learn, adapt, and change.

What is the subconscious mind?

The subconscious mind is the part of your mind that stores your habits, learned behaviors, emotional patterns, beliefs, memories, and automatic responses. It works quietly in the background, allowing you to perform countless everyday tasks without having to consciously think about each one.

For example, you don't have to consciously remember how to brush your teeth, drive a familiar route, or tie your shoes. In the same way, many emotional reactions, habits, and patterns of thinking become automatic through repetition and experience.

Hypnosis lets you work with these deeply learned patterns, helping to update them and making it easier to let go of behaviors that no longer serve you, replacing them with healthier, more empowering responses.

What is the conscious mind?

Your conscious mind is the part of your mind that's actively thinking, reasoning, analyzing, and making decisions. It's what you use to solve problems, plan ahead, and evaluate new information.

While your conscious mind is excellent at understanding what you want to change, your subconscious mind is often responsible for how you automatically respond. That's why willpower alone isn't always enough to create lasting change. You may consciously want to stop procrastinating, manage anxiety, or eat healthier, while your subconscious continues to run familiar patterns that have been reinforced over time.

During hypnosis, the critical, analytical part of the conscious mind becomes quieter, allowing new perspectives and positive suggestions to be more readily accepted by the subconscious, where real and lasting change actually takes place.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Almost everyone who wants to experience hypnosis can. The most important ingredients are a willingness to participate, the ability to follow simple instructions, and a comfortable level of trust.

Hypnosis isn't something that's done to you. It's something we create together. If you can become absorbed in a movie, lose yourself in a book, or daydream while driving a familiar route, you already have the ability to experience hypnosis.

People who struggle are usually those who feel anxious about losing control. In reality, you stay aware and in charge throughout the entire session.

Will I be asleep?

No, hypnosis is not sleep. Most people remain awake, aware, and able to hear everything that's being said throughout the session.

Many people describe hypnosis as feeling similar to the moments just before falling asleep or just after waking - deeply relaxed, comfortable, and peaceful, while still fully aware of what's happening. Others compare it to becoming completely absorbed in a good book or movie, where your attention is focused but your mind remains active.

Throughout the session, you'll remain in control. You can speak, move, adjust your position, or even open your eyes at any time. You're never unconscious, and you can't get "stuck" in hypnosis.

For many clients, the most surprising part of the experience is just how natural it feels. Think of it as a focused rest for your conscious mind.

What does it feel like?

Most people are surprised by how natural hypnosis feels. There's no dramatic shift or strange sensation. Instead, you'll likely experience a state of deep relaxation combined with focused attention - similar to becoming completely absorbed in a good book, a movie, or a daydream.

Some people notice their body feels pleasantly relaxed, heavy and warm, or light and floating - while others simply become less aware of their surroundings as they focus on my voice. You may lose track of time, find that everyday worries fade into the background, or simply feel calm and peaceful.

There's no "right" way to experience hypnosis. Some people feel deeply relaxed, while others remain quite alert and wonder if they're hypnotized at all. Both experiences are completely normal, and both can be highly effective.

Throughout the session, you'll continue to hear my voice and remain aware of what's happening around you. You're simply directing your attention inward, allowing your mind to become more receptive to positive change.

One of the comments I hear most often after a session is, "I haven't felt that relaxed in years."

Will I lose control?

Absolutely not.

This is probably the single biggest misconception about hypnosis, thanks to how hypnosis is portrayed in movies and stage shows.

Clinical hypnosis is an evidence based, collaborative process that actually requires your cooperation and consent. You remain aware of what's happening, you can speak at any time, and you can end the experience whenever you choose.

You cannot be made to reveal secrets, accept suggestions that violate your values, or do anything against your will.

A skilled hypnotist guides the process. But you are always the one in control.

I have a friend who tried hypnosis and says it didn't work. Why?

There are a few reasons why someone may not achieve the results they were hoping for with hypnosis.

First, hypnosis is a skillful process - not simply listening to a recording or repeating positive affirmations. The experience, training, and approach of the hypnotist can make a significant difference. Every client is unique, and effective hypnosis should be tailored to the individual rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all script.

Second, expectations matter. Some people expect hypnosis to feel dramatic or like they've "lost control." In reality, many of the most profound changes happen during what feels like a calm, natural state of focused relaxation. Resistance is another factor. If someone feels anxious, skeptical, or is trying too hard to analyze the experience, it can get in the way of allowing the process of change to simply happen, easily and naturally.

Finally, not every goal can or should be accomplished in a single session. While some people experience rapid change, others benefit from a series of sessions that allow new patterns to develop and strengthen over time.

The good news is that most people who are open to the process and committed to their goals are pleasantly surprised by how effective hypnosis can be.

How long does it take?

The honest answer is: it depends on your goals.

Some people notice significant improvement after a single session, particularly with a specific fear, habit, or performance issue. More complex concerns, such as anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, self-esteem, or long-standing emotional patterns often benefit from a series of sessions that build upon one another.

During your initial consultation, we'll discuss your goals, your history, and what you'd like to achieve. Based on that conversation, I'll recommend the approach that I believe will give you the greatest opportunity for lasting success.

While every person is different, meaningful change happens most consistently when hypnosis is viewed as a process rather than a quick fix. Your commitment to that process plays an important role in the results you achieve.
